A Bone to Pick – Charlaine Harris

3/5 Hidden Skeletons

On The Back:

Death comes calling on a small-town librarian whose life is passing her by.

Aurora “Roe” Teagarden’s fortunes change when a deceased acquaintance names her as heir to a rather substantial estate, including money, jewelry, and a house complete with a skull hidden in a window seat. Roe concludes that the elderly women has purposely left her a murder to solve. So she must identify the victim and figure out which one of her new, ordinary-seeming neighbors is a murderer-without putting herself in deadly danger

My Thoughts:

Wow, another great book in Charlaine Harris’s Aurora Teagarden Mystery series. In A Bone to Pick Roe finds herself the heir to a large estate, and unfortunately that estate comes with a human skull. Roe finds herself wondering who the skull belongs to and why it was in her seemingly harmless friend’s house.

I really like the characters in this series, Roe is balanced and reminds me of the librarians in my town. Roe has a new love interest, Aubrey, who I hope we see more of in future books. He’s a serious, but solid character. I absolutely love Roe’s mom she’s hilarious and bossy, but in a good way.

Between this book and the last it seemed like a lifetime had passed. So many things had happened that it felt like 1/3 of the book was devoted to explaining a chain of events that seemed unnecessary. The mystery was almost nonexistent, Roe found the skull and wondered about it, but there was really no sleuthing going on in the book and the killer just kind of fell into Roe’s hands.

With stellar writing and characters, yet a shaky mystery and a huge gap between this book and the last I’m awarding this book 3/5 stars. I hope the next book picks up right after this one!
